Weeeeeeeeee! I've got some bright polishes to show you today! A couple of weeks ago I picked up the Maybelline Color Show Neon Collection (currently £2.99 each - 3 for 2 in Boots). I'd been umming and ahhing over these for a while but they never seemed to have the full collection in at once and the OCD in me meant I didn't want to risk buying three out of the four if I wasn't going to manage to get the last one (yes, I appreciate this is slightly mental).
So, there are four polishes in this collection; Orange Fix, Green Zing, Electric Pink and Fuschia Fever.
So as for all neon polishes, I always start with a white basecoat, to help the bright colour pop out more, so all these swatches have started with a base coat of Sinful Colors Snow Me White.
So! Onto the swatches... starting with Orange Fix. My, my, my... what a lovely orange. Now this was three coats over the white base, and this polish dries to a kind of rubbery finish, so I've finished with a shiny top coat, as I wasn't too keen on the kind of half matte/half shine finish that it originally had. This orange is lovely and bright, but I wouldn't really describe it as neon. The camera has dulled it down the brightness a bit so it is a bit brighter in real life.
Next, onto the green... this is Green Zing. Again; three coats over a white base plus a top coat. This is a pretty bright green, I'd say this is probably the most neon out of the collection, but still not as bright as some neons I've had (perhaps I've been spoilt a bit by good ol' China Glaze).
Next we have Electric Pink. Again, three coats over a white base plus top coat. This is a lovely bright pink shade... really summery! Definitely more of a bright corally pink than a WOW ZING NEON pink though.
Finally, we have Fuschia Fever. Now, would my camera photograph this properly AT ALL? Hell no. I have had this problem before though with neon purples, it's just the colour my camera won't play with, and any colour adjustment makes my hands look dead so you'll just have to imagine the brightness here; it's definitely more like the bright purpley tones you can see towards the base of my nails than the deeper more maroony purple colour that seems to be showing up. Again, three coats over a white base plus top coat.
So, what do you think? Overall; I think these polishes are great colours, but perhaps the title "NEON" is a bit misleading, although I wasn't convinced by the colour in the bottle that they were going to be neon so this wasn't a showstopper. They are bright, fun summery colours, but I don't think they'd be this bright without the white base and at times the formula was a bit streaky. However; for the price, you can't argue too much, and I'm very impressed at all the great affordable polishes Maybelline have been bringing out recently, so I'd say; great start, but can we have some more WOW BRIGHT ZING POP colours next time please?
