Barry M Sequin Effects - all three swatches and comparisons

Friday, 3 May 2013

Hello!  I have managed to get my hands on the new Barry M Sequin Effects polishes and I've got swatches of all three for you today.  There are three colours in this collection, a white with primary colour glitter, a pink with primary colour glitter and a black with gold glitter.

Barry M Sequin Effects

Firstly, I was under the impression that this were glitters in a coloured base, like the polishes that indie companies like Lush Lacquer and the like make.  I must have missed the memo about these being textured polishes!  ( I have gone back and checked and they did say "Add a textured sparkle to your nails", so my bad, I didn't pick up on that).  Also, the colours of the glitter in the pink and white polishes is very much red, yellow, green and blue, however it looked like there were more glitter colours in the pictures I saw in the press releases.

Anyway, onto the swatches.  This is the white glitter.  I painted a base colour of Sinful Colors Snow Me White, and then one coat of the Barry M Sequin Effects.  The formula is VERY thick and quite difficult to spread across your nail, but there was enough glitter in there to only need one coat.  As you can see, this is very textured!  Which I was surprised by, but obviously I've banged on enough now about my ability to read the details properly.

So I decided to see if I could get rid of the gritty effect with some top coat, and well, it kind of worked, but you can see after two thick coats of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri, there is still some of the texture showing through, and to be honest I think I've made it look worse!

So, there had been a lot of excitement about these polishes being dupes for some of the more expensive brands that aren't easy to get hold of in the UK, so I thought I'd also include some comparisons in this post.  Unfortunately I don't own China Glaze It's A Trap-eze, which was the polish that most people were comparing this one with, but I do have Lush Lacquer Sugar Daddy, which is a white polish with multi coloured glitter in.

So here is a bottle comparison.  The Lush Lacquer has a much brighter base colour, and has some strand glitter in there also.  Plus, there is a larger range of glitter colours.

One the nail...  This is where I am not sold by the textured finish.  The smooth finish of Sugar Daddy is much more appealing to me unfortunately.

So, onto the pink.  Again, this is a very thick formula and I put one coat of it over Collection Cosmetics Hoola Hoop.  I really don't want to say horrible things about Barry M because I love them so hard usually, but this looks like a toddler threw up a cupcake onto my fingers.  Sorry.

So, again I tried the top coat trick, and I made it worse!  This is two coats of top coat, and to be honest it's just starting to look like a slightly shiny gloopy mess on my fingers.

So, let's have a comparison.  There was a lot of talk about this being a great dupe for Deborah Lippmann Candy Shop.  Well, I do have that polish and it is one of my all time favourites, so I was interested to see how it would compare.  Also, I added into the mix Lush Lacquer Gumballs (the base colour is slightly peachier but it's got similar colour glitter) and Revlon Girly, which is a fairly new release and pretty easy to get in the UK.

As you can see, the Barry M just doesn't hit the mark in comparison.  Candy Shop will always be a winner in my eyes, but Revlon Girly is looking pretty hot right now too.

So, onto the last polish.  This is the black.  Again this is one coat over 2True Black as a base colour.  This definitely has more of a look of the Textured Effect polishes, and to be honest, I don't think that the gold glitter works in there.  The polish dries to cover the gold glitter, so it loses some of it's sparkle.

Two layers of top coat.  Ew.  Sorry.  This one definitely does not want a shiny top coat.

So, when I first saw pictures of this particular polish, I though, "hang on a second?  Is this not exactly the same as Gold Mine?", so I've used this as the comparison.  Gold Mine is packed with far more glitter, and the gold glitter is a lot smaller.

So, on the nail.  I think I prefer Gold Mine.  There's nmore glitter, and it sparkles a lot more.

So, overall.  I'm really sad to say I'm not a fan.  Obviously my expectations were of some lovely dupes of the more top end glitters on the market, but adding the texture really doesn't work (for me anyway).  As I said upthread, it makes me sad to say that I am not in love with a new Barry M creation, but obviously I am impartial and I am not going to lie.   Out of the three, I think I like the white the most, so I will give it another crack again soon and see if I can get it to work for me somehow.

What do you think?

  1. Oh I'm really disappointed! I was looking forward to these, but I'm so glad you did the comparisons, I don't think I'll bother with them now! I already have Gold Mine and think I'm just gonna buy Revlon Girly instead, I think its my favourite.

    1. Revlon Girly is lovely. I like that it's got blue/purple/pink glitter in it, it looks so much nicer.

  2. Oh. This is most sad. I am going to get the Revlon one though. Can you still buy gold mine?

  3. I'm so disappointed. I really loved the look of the white one, and I have held off buying It's a Trap-eze while waiting for this. But I just don't like textured polish, and I don't think these look nice at all on the nail. I'm off to buy It's a Trap-eze and will be giving these a miss. What a shame.

  6. Honestly, those look awful! That texture... just messed the whole polish. I am gonna cry now.

  7. Hmmm, I don't think I'm a fan either. Texture is ok (without glitter), and glitter is ok (without texture). Loved your liquorice all-sorts nails btw.

Ah well, you've tried them out (and saved many of us from buying them, so thank you). It's not often a polish is a 'miss'. Btw I have Barry M Goldmine on a the mo. Nice and smooth and sparkly! :)

  9. this is quite disappointing. I was excited by these polishes as well, having only just got into the glitter love that a lot of bloggers have.

I think in this instance Barry M have just tried to do much in one bottle. Coloured base AND glitter AND texture has just made one hot mess. A shame really as I was going to purchase the white and black one but I'll have to shell out for the more expensive end of the market to get that effect.

    1. Totally agree! Gold Mine is a perfect nice dupe though, and that's only 2.99 so I'd definitely treat yourself to that one!

  12. Well let me be the first to say I like them.
I would like to see them swatched one or two more times around before I make a final decision, but I like em! The two non black ones remind me of birthday cake frosting for some reason, maybe thats why Im so drawn to them!

    1. Hehe! I think I was so NO NO NO to them because I wasn't expecting the texture, the white one might be ok though so I will try that again x

  13. fab review! I really don't like the look of the texture and the glitter, makes it look like the application went wrong or a 2 year old has had a go - and that would bug me. The Deborah Lippman looks stunning though... :)

  14. Thanks for a great review, I'm glad you felt able to be honest. I don't think I'll be getting any of these; sad to say I think Barry M has missed the mark here. Too much going on, too bumpy........ can't quite put my finger on it but they don't work for me.

    1. Thanks lovely. I like textured polishes so without the glitter they may have been ok, but as you said, too much going on!
