Born Pretty Store Review - Foil Transfers

Monday, 25 March 2013

Hello!  I've got an exciting review for you today; some goodies that the lovely Born Pretty Store sent me to try out.  These are their new range of foil transfers, of which they've got TONS of colours, and you can create some pretty cool designs.  Remember to use code MXL91 to get 10% off your purchase and free international shipping.

I chose three colours, a holographic pink, a purple and a green/blue/purple gradient.  The foils come in a little pot and you get over a metre of each colour.  The idea behind these foils is that you paint your nails a base colour, and then when that is completely dry, paint on a top coat, and press the foils shiny side facing upwards onto your nail, and they will transfer onto your nail.  The reality of this isn't so easy (perhaps I am cack-handed!) and my first attempt didn't really work, so I decided on a new approach and painted my nails a black base colour, then let that dry out completely, and then painted a PVA top coat, which I also let dry out until it was clear, and then I began....

I started off just covering my nail completely with the purple/blue/green gradient foil.  I used a hoof stick to rub the transfer onto my nail, and then finished this with top coat.  This looks gorgeous!  So metallic and shiny.  The photos do pick out the imperfections, but in real life they aren't so noticeable, I just kept staring at my nails and going OOOOH!  SHINY!!!

Next up, I decided to use the other two colours on top of the foil I already had to create a more scattered effect.  So again, PVA top coat left to dry, and then I quickly pressed the foil patterns on and off over my nails to get a completely random pattern.

Here's a close up money shot - scchhhhh-ting!!! You can see all the depths of the different metallic colours, I really like this effect.

The effect really reminded me of a galaxy nail type look, so I decided to top coat this with a mixture of silver hex and blue hex glitters to finish it off.  Ooooh!  Swirly galaxy goodness!

Finally, I thought I'd give it another go in a more random pattern, using just the pink and the purple and leaving a black base coat showing through.  I really like this, it's like a gold leaf effect with different colours.

Anyway, what do you think?  I'm not convinced it's my best work ever, but I wanted to show you my genuine first attempts and I am hoping there is room for improvement!  I am going to give these another try again soon, as I reckon there's loads of ways to use these (I'm thinking just on the tips, or a line down the middle of the nail).  And again, click through on the image to go to Born Pretty Store and check out their pretty freaking excellent selection of nail art supplies.

  2. I actually quite like the imperfections - this is really cool. Might have to give it a go, how was wear and tear?

    1. Thank you! The top coat seemed to seal it all in fine, so normal wear and tear really; I use Sally Hansen Insta-Dri and that does the trick for me!

  3. When you applied your top coat, did the foil shrink at all? I have foil that I bought from dollar nail art and they shrink if you put on a top coat. And as pocketmoneypolishes asked, what's the wear and tear like? Foils are nice, but do not always last more than a couple hours.

    1. There wasn't any shrinkage for me, but I wonder if it was the mixture of the PVA glue base + top coat that kept it in place. I've heard Seche Vite can cause shrinkage on normal manis so I always stick to Sally Hansen and I've not had any problems...
