17 Rock Hard Nail Effects - Swatches & Review

Tuesday, 19 February 2013

Right, I have a bit of a swatchathon for you today (and probably the rest of this week, I've been a bit naughty!  But, it is February, and it's cold and miserable, so I've got to brighten up the day somehow, right?)

So, quite a few brands seem to be jumping on the leather/texture effect bandwagon.  Nails Inc have brought out a leather effect range, but to be totally honest, I don't often buy Nails Inc products unless they have a super sale on, as I think they are a bit pricey for what they are.

Barry M have bought our a pastel coloured range of textured effect polishes, of which I will have swatches for you tomorrow, as today I wanted to show you Seventeen's (17) range of textured polish.  These appealed to me more, as I'm not 100% convinced that the texture effect is suited to pastel/pale colours.

It appears what was formally known as 17 is getting a bit of a rebrand, as these polishes are all labelled up with "Seventeen" instead.  Seventeen is Boots own brand, so they are the only stockists of this polish.  This range is called "Rock Hard Nail Effects" and I believe there are four colours (also a black) however I only managed to pick up these threee yesterday; originally named "Grey", "Red" and "Blue".  The promise is "Matte effect in only two coats", so we'll give it a go.

So, starting off with Grey. This was true to it's promise, this was only two coats and was opaque.  I actually really liked this colour, and the texture effect did look pretty cool.

Next up is Blue.  This did apply much darker than it looked in the bottle, which is a bit of a shame as I think I prefer the colour in the bottle.  It's almost purple really.  Still the effect looks pretty cool still.  This was also opaque in two coats.

Finally is the red.  Unfortunately for me, my nails are quite stained underneath, so this actually took 3-4 coats to be opaque, so if I was to try it again I'd probably put a red base on before hand, rather than layering up.  The colour is really nice, I'm just never sure how much I like bright red tones on my nails though, so this is probably my least favourite out of the bunch.  But still, really nice and the effect works really well.

So, what are your thoughts?  I am not completely sold on these as I am a big fan of nail art and I'm unsure how I could use them for that yet as you don't apply a top coat (as this loses the effect completely).  But they are definitely a cheaper dupe of the Nails Inc polishes.

    1. It is nice isn't it, I think I've been a bit mean because it wasn't as opaque as the others so took ages to do (especially while the texture doesn't show until it's dried)! I just really don't like BRIGHT RED on myself all that much.

    1. Thank you! Nails Inc just isn't worth £15 a bottle when you can get such good stuff from 17/Barry M for loads cheaper!

  4. Wow, I totally didn't know that 17 (or seventeen as they seem to be now) have brought out textured polishes too. I think 17 are my favourite brand so I need to go and get some! I think I like the navy blue best x

    1. Hehe! I think the colours for these might be a bit more usable for nail art/etc than the Barry M ones.

  5. These look great - I've not seen them before but I'll have to look out for them, lol! They look a bit 'shinier' than the Barry M ones, is that the case in real life? It was the 'shininess' of Nails Inc Concrete I didn't like.

    1. I would say the blue and the grey weren't really shiny, that's just where the light has hit them. The red did seem a bit shiny, but I had to put quite a few coats of that on, so I'm wondering if it wasn't fully 100% dried out when I was photographing it.

  6. The grey looks quite similar to China Glaze Stone Cold.
