Spots and Stripes

Friday, 30 November 2012

Today I've got a really fun, easy mani to show you.  Whenever I'm stuck for a bit of inspiration, I know that polka dots are always a winner!  This is a yellow by Misa, alongside Collection Cosmetics White and Black.

Pink Velvet Manicure

Thursday, 29 November 2012

Today I had a little go at a velvet manicure, just on the one finger on each hand.  I bought some flocking powder from eBay and decided to give it a go.  Basically, you paint your nail as close a colour to the flocking powder, apply a top coat and then use tweezers to apply flocking powder to the nail.  Press it down slightly with your fingers, then once it is dry, brush off the excess.  I actually think it looks quite cool, and lasted surprisingly longer than I expected (not like them berluddy caviar beads!).  The other nails I painted a bright pink and added some heart shaped sequins, so overally this is quite a girly fluffy manicure.

Butterfly Rainbow Gradient

Wednesday, 28 November 2012

My lovely friend Lyndsay at Pie's Eyes did a fabulous Rainbow Gradient a few months ago and I had it on my list of things to try out and in the collection of water decals I got the other day from At Your Fingertips Nail Art Design on eBay, there were some colourful butterflies, so I decided to team those up with a rainbow gradient.

There is a little bit of tip wear as I took these a day later, however in good news I have finally got my lightbox all set up, so goodbye grainy photos!

I started off with a basecoat of white, and then used a red, yellow, green, blue and purple and sponged that onto my nails.  (If you want any hints and tips for perfecting your gradients then take a look at my tutorial here)

Yellow Lacey Nails

Tuesday, 27 November 2012

Today I have some lacey nails to show you.  I bought some water decals from At Your Fingertips Nail Art Designs on eBay the other week and thought I'd give them a go over a 17 Yellow polish.  I haven't tried water decals before and assumed they might be a bit faffy, or likely to go wrong, but they are so easy, and look so good!

Basically, you cut the piece you want to stick on your nail off the sheet, hold it in water (with tweezers) for about 10-30 seconds, slide it off the backing sheet, then apply to your nail.  Once it's dried, top coat and the really great thing is that because they are so thin, they fit flush to your nails (so no edge marks like stickers).

Spots and Stripes

Monday, 26 November 2012

Morning! It's Monday again - boo and hiss!  Today I've done some stripes and dots; it's all looking a bit tribal over here.  These are pretty straightforward to do but look really effective.  Firstly I painted a base colour on each nail, and then I used striping tape to put black, white or gold stripes on my nails.

After this, I used various dotting tools to place dots over the stripes (again in white, black and gold) and then finished with top coat.  These did take a good while to do (as usual!) but I reckon they'd look good on their own as an accent nail.

Island of Misfit Toys

Sunday, 25 November 2012

This is Island of Misfit Toys, from Pretty & Polished.  It is a clear base, with loads of multi-coloured glitter in there, all different shapes and sizes.  I decided to put this over a yellow polish, and I bejewelled one nail with some different sized diamantes.  I'm not totally sure this works, but it shows off the glitter nicely.  I think I might try it next time over a white or black.

Rainbow Checkerboard Gradient

Saturday, 24 November 2012

I have quite a time consuming manicure to show you today; this is a rainbow gradient checkerboard (that was the only name I could come up with!).  I drew inspiration from Chalkboard Nails' amazing nails the other day and knew I wanted to give this a go.

I started off by doing a base gradient of yellow, green and blue.  I totally love this combination.  Also, I have now realised that when I am at home during the day the light (so pre-8am and post 5pm) is just so bad that I need to DEFINITELY sort out a better photography situation, as you may see in the difference in the "after" photos.  I haven't got a lightbox sorted yet, but have had to stop being a lazy ass and using my iPhone to take pictures, and use my proper camera instead.  I am pleased with the pictures however they are certainly less forgiving, in particular in macro mode, so apologies if my fingers look a bit dry and sad, I never noticed until processing!

I then used striping tape and put a criss-cross pattern over my nails, and then did a red, orange yellow gradient over the top.  It took ridiculous ages to get all the tape on, I won't lie!  But it's probably worth it for how cool and unusual this looks.
