Day 20: WATER MARBLED (30 Day Challenge)

Thursday, 20 September 2012

Today the challenge is WATER MARBLED.  I berluddy hate water marbling I do.  It's one of those things that looks so amazing when other people do it, but I find it's generally a bit hit and miss for me, and also, it's pretty time consuming, and you aren't guaranteed a great result (at least you aren't when I do it!)

One of the important things in water marbling is the preparation.  You need to use ROOM TEMPERATURE water (some people use filtered water too, but I don't have that on tap, literally).  Now, in the past, I've decided on the spur of the moment to give it another go, so have tried to guess room temperature by mixing cold and hot water together.  This time, I put some water in a glass the day before, so I could definitely guarantee it would be the right temperature.  And who knew?  I clearly thought room temperature was a lot warmer than what it actually was, as I seem to have had a win with this.

Aside from the water temperature rules, you need to paint a white basecoat onto your nails, and then I would thoroughly recommend sellotaping up around your fingers so you don't have to spend a million years cleaning up afterwards.  I used Kiko Black, Collection 2000 White, and Kiko Strawberry Pink.

There are loads of tutorials online for this, but basically, you keep placing a dot of polish into the water and alternate the colours.  The polish will spread out and eventually when you've got enough polish in there, use a cocktail stick to drag around a pattern, then place your nails into the water (one or two at a time).  Then use the cocktail stick to drag the rest of the polish that hasn't stuck to your nails away from your nails and then lift your nails out.  Wait for the polish to dry and then take the tape up and clean any excess polish left on your fingers with a cotton bud and some nail varnish remover.

  1. They came out so pretty! I love the colors you used. I also noticed that the temperature of the water does matter, how odd!

    1. Thanks! I always thought "whatever, it really can't matter that much" but clearly it does! Haha! X
